Slow footsteps and ragged breathing might be part of the ambient audio track – or they might mean that a nightmarish creature is behind the next door. The story drew me reluctantly onward, even when I wanted to walk away – not out of frustration or boredom, but because I was outright scared of what awaited me down the next dark hallway.

The journal notes you unearth tell a story of hubris and curiosity inexorably pulling a fascinating cast of characters through their own descent into madness, which leads to the current predicament. Amnesia follows the tradition of Lovecraft, Poe, and Shelley, weaving a tale deeply tied to the 19th century's spirit of discovery, power, and glory. The backstory parallels Daniel's current quest. Going into further detail would spoil the mystery Amnesia's setting is too intricate, and the pacing of reveals is too well crafted to disrespect. A literal living nightmare relentlessly pursues Daniel through the castle as he struggles to piece together enough of his past to make sense of his former self's final directive: Find and kill Alexander of Brennenburg.

His reasons for this drastic act remain vague, but the horrible reality of the castle gives reason enough to squeeze your eyes shut. "I can't tell you why, but know this I choose to forget," reads the note his former self left for him, dated August 1839, before intentionally blanking his own memory. Waking up in a decrepit Prussian castle with no memory of his past, he soon learns that his amnesia is self-inflicted. Amnesia is barely a game in the traditional sense, leaving the nearly two decades of horror gaming tradition since Alone in the Dark by the wayside and forging its own twisted path.ĭaniel's story is a tragedy from the beginning. This indie project is an expertly crafted tale of horror and discovery that uses its interactive nature to enthrall players as deeply as any tale in any medium. “Gods Verging on Sanity” simply doesn’t sound like anything I’ve heard in the genre before. If there is any justice in the world, the sizable contingent of gamers who incessantly bleat about the lack of new experiences in modern video games will purchase Amnesia: The Dark Descent right now. Initially it has more in common with Massive Attack or Everything But the Girl, but it changes into something else completely. Final track “Children at Play” is more of a disco trifle, upbeat and perky, but run through the Black Nail Cabaret machinery. A majestic midtempo burner just waiting to be loved. “Maelstrom” may very well be one of the songs of 2020. Here we have nine tracks showing what you can accomplish if you refuse to limit yourself. Black Nail Cabaret follows no given formula and it’s utterly refreshing. Musically we move fluently through edgy technopop, cinematic darkwave, twisted disco and trip hop beats.

Here and there she echoes the power of Claudia Brücken. The daring vocals of Arvai-Illes adds to the mysterious feel in many songs. Unique in their tone and vision, Black Nail Cabaret produce varied electropop, more often than not shrouded in darkness and drama. “Gods Verging on Sanity” delivers on the promise. There is a certain quality linked to their Eastern Europe origin that can be heard in their music and as with all dark pop acts, they are influenced by British bands. Starting in 2008 and presenting their first material to the world in the form of the “Butterflies” single in 2011, this duo have built their reputation slowly, but steadily. Vocalist Emese Arvai-Illes and musical mastermind Krisztian Arvai relocated from their native Hungary to London for five years (until 2017) and Emese still spends a lot of time there, she tells us. Now they are signed to the high quality label Dependent Records and the strong teaser material from “Gods Verging on Sanity” made me really curious. Black Nail Cabaret have always been present in the back of my head, somehow, but I have never taken the time to explore them.
